Making a welcoming calm corner
Progress over perfection.
A calm corner is an optional place to recover, never a punishment or a place a child must stay alone. Practise when everyone is settled.
Try it together
- Choose a quiet, supervised space with a cushion, a comfort toy and water nearby.
- Offer safe, age-appropriate choices such as drawing or squeezing a cushion. Avoid small items for young children.
- Try the space together for a minute and agree that your child can ask for company or leave when ready.
Words you could use
“This spot is here when you want a quieter moment. Would you like me beside you?”
One manageable next step
Choose two comfort items together rather than buying a whole kit.
