Staying close through a meltdown

Progress over perfection.

During intense distress, safety and a steady adult matter more than explaining rules. This guidance is general support, not a treatment plan.

Try it together

  1. Reduce noise, remove nearby hazards and give space without leaving a young child unsafe.
  2. Speak briefly and calmly. Offer company without forcing touch, eye contact or conversation.
  3. After settling, offer water and rest. Discuss one small prevention idea later; seek professional help for recurring unsafe distress.

Words you could use

“I’m here. I won’t let anyone get hurt. We can talk when your body feels ready.”

One manageable next step

Choose one way to make the space quieter next time.

Educational support only — not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Adapt to your child’s skills and supervise activities. If difficulties are persistent, intense or unsafe, seek qualified support. In an emergency call your local emergency number (000 in Australia).
