Choices that build confidence

Progress over perfection.

Small genuine choices let children practise deciding. Avoid offering an option you cannot accept.

Try it together

  1. Offer two manageable choices about clothes, snacks or the order of tasks.
  2. For older children, ask them to name a third workable option and think through the consequences.
  3. Accept the choice without changing the rules afterwards. If neither works, explain the boundary and help.

Words you could use

“You can start with reading or spelling. Both need doing; which feels easier to begin?”

One manageable next step

Educational support only — not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Adapt to your child’s skills and supervise activities. If difficulties are persistent, intense or unsafe, seek qualified support. In an emergency call your local emergency number (000 in Australia).
