When siblings clash

Progress over perfection.

Start with safety, not deciding who is the bad child. Each child can have a real feeling even when hurtful behaviour must stop.

Try it together

  1. Separate unsafe play calmly and check whether anyone needs care.
  2. When settled, give each child a short turn to explain without interruption.
  3. Name the shared problem and offer a workable plan such as turns, another toy or space apart. Do not force apologies or affection.

Words you could use

“You both want the truck. I won’t let anyone hit. Let’s work out whose turn is first.”

One manageable next step

Practise one turn-taking plan when everyone is calm.

Educational support only — not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Adapt to your child’s skills and supervise activities. If difficulties are persistent, intense or unsafe, seek qualified support. In an emergency call your local emergency number (000 in Australia).
