Repairing after you lose your cool

Progress over perfection.

A difficult moment does not erase your care. Focus on safety, a clear repair and one support that may help prevent a repeat.

Try it together

  1. Put everyone safely first and take a brief pause if another safe adult can help.
  2. When settled, apologise for the action without blaming the child or asking them to reassure you.
  3. Identify a pattern such as hunger or too many demands and arrange support. Seek urgent help if you fear hurting yourself or someone else.

Words you could use

“I raised my voice. That was my responsibility. I’m sorry, and I’ll try a pause next time.”

One manageable next step

Choose one early warning sign and one person you can call.

Educational support only — not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Adapt to your child’s skills and supervise activities. If difficulties are persistent, intense or unsafe, seek qualified support. In an emergency call your local emergency number (000 in Australia).
